At Stanford University’s OVAL lab, we are developing advanced conversational technology and virtual assistants to power the new, voice-enabled, web. We are a team of technologists, visionaries, and philanthropists committed to disrupting surveillance capitalism and creating open technology that preserves privacy and fosters fair competition.

We are launching a new initiative to create production-quality software for consumers based on our latest research results with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. We have working prototypes and plan to deliver the following features in the next 12 months:

  • A conversational-agent development toolset that can automatically generate dialogue agents from database and API schemas.
  • Thingpedia, an open platform of virtual assistant skills, available to any virtual assistant.
  • A voice assistant that preserves privacy, running as a browser extension and on personal hardware.

We are looking for highly talented software engineers to lead the effort at this exciting early stage, and we have 2 open positions for full stack developers with product lead experience. While full-time employment at Stanford is possible, we also welcome remote contractor applications.

The qualifications for these positions are:

Understanding of conversational technologies is desirable, but not required.
Experience integrating with 3rd party vendor platforms.
Development Tool Lead:
Experience or background in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing.
Experience or background in program development tools.

In general, we expect the successful candidates to have the following qualifications:

  • Well-rounded computer science background.
  • Experience with writing unit, functional and regression tests for developed code.
  • Understanding of secure development practices.

Location: Stanford, CA

Employment: Full-time, flexible schedule, and mostly remote work
